A New York judge dismissed a lawsuit filed against Mary J. Blige by Misa Hylton, Blige’s former friend and stylist.
As Blavity reported, Hylton filed the $5 million lawsuit against the “Good Morning Gorgeous” singer in April over allegations of breach of contract, emotional distress and interference with business relationships. In the complaint, Hylton alleges that Blige engaged in shady business practices and attempted to poach rapper and client Vado from her management company.
In a ruling Tuesday, Judge Phaedra F. Perry-Bond issued a warning against Hylton after she missed a crucial deadline to defend her allegations against Blige after the Grammy-winning musician entered a motion to dismiss, which “constitutes the abandonment” of Hylton’s claims. The judge set the record straight over Hylton’s million-dollar suit.
“The court in no way condones parties filing lawsuits claiming millions in damages based on inflammatory accusations, only to have those very same parties abandon their allegations when faced with a motion to dismiss and sanctions,” the judge wrote. “Plaintiffs and their counsel shall consider this a warning to refrain from engaging in similar patterns of behavior in the future. This written warning may serve as weighty evidence on a future application for sanctions if plaintiffs and/or their counsel continue to engage in similar bad faith litigation tactics,” Perry-Bond wrote in the ruling obtained by Rolling Stone.
What is Blige being accused of?
Hylton and Blige became close friends in the early 1990s after Hylton styled the Bronx native during the promotion of Blige’s 1992 album What’s the 411? At the time, Hylton dated Sean “Diddy” Combs, and she is the mother of his eldest son, Justin Dior Combs. Hylton ended the friendship after filing the lawsuit on April 29, according to Rolling Stone.
According to court documents, Vado entered into a management contract with Hylton’s agency, M.I.S.A. management, on July 25, 2023, and the company receives 20% of the rapper’s income, per Blavity. However, on Oct. 1, 2023, Vado signed a record deal with Blige’s Beautiful Life Productions. The pair then collaborated for Blige’s 2023 single “Still Believe in Love.”
Hylton also alleged that Blige interfered with her business relationship with Vado, and excluded her in “intimate and inappropriate” settings, including “late night yacht outings” and hotel rooms, The Grio reported.
Blige’s attorneys accused Hylton of ‘fabricating accusations’ in the suit
The lawsuit lists Vado as a co-plaintiff, alleging Blige withheld his music and owed him compensation for breaching his contract.
Blige’s attorneys argued against Hylton’s complaint, stating that Hylton was not a licensed talent agent and her company was not a legitimate corporation, per The Grio.
After filing the lawsuit, Blige’s attorney, Sarah M. Matz, accused Hylton of “fabricating accusations that will be discussed in the press and on social media for the purposes of harassing Defendants and trying to coerce a favorable settlement.”
Matz also questioned Vado’s claims, stating that “Blige is not a party to Vado’s recording agreement nor has any other basis been pled against Blige, making it clear she was included solely for purposes of harassment.”
Blige’s legal team said Vado’s music has been delayed because he had not delivered marketable material.
