How far are you willing to go for the ones you love is the question that may be swirling around viewers’ heads by the end of Netflix’s latest thriller, His & Hers.
News of a potential serial killer on the loose in her hometown of Dahlonega, Georgia, brings Anna Andrews (Tessa Thompson) back to work following her disappearance from society. Anna had originally left to mourn the loss of the baby girl she shared with husband, Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal).
The only problem? No one knew where Anna went for the year that she couldn’t be traced, not even her detective husband.
Meet the cast of His & Hers
A murder-mystery where no one in the small Georgia town is safe lies within the heart of Netflix’s latest thriller, created by director, executive producer and writer William Oldroyd, who was inspired by the eponymous novel by Alice Feeney.
Anna, a WSK TV news anchor, flees to nearby Atlanta at the first chance she can to escape the trauma from her teen years that continues to lurk in the small town where she once lived with her mother, Alice, played by Crystal Fox.
Jack, Andrews’ estranged husband, resorts to working as a sheriff’s office detective in their hometown, Dahlonega, while living with his sister, Anna’s former friend Zoe, played by Marin Ireland, and his niece, 6-year-old Meg (Ellie Rose Sawyer).
Rebecca Rittenhouse plays Lexy Jones, Anna’s WSK TV colleague and rival, who viewers soon learn is really a former childhood friend named Catherine Kelly, who became the brunt of the evil schemes of Anna’s former rich (and downright evil) friends from high school. The deaths of those former friends, Helen (Poppy Liu) and Rachel (Jamie Tisdale), kick off the roller-coaster ride that His & Hers takes viewers on throughout its six episodes.
Sunita Mani plays Jack’s partner, Priya, a new detective at the Dahlonega Sheriff’s Office, and Pablo Schriber assumes the role of Richard, a cameraman at WSK TV who is the husband of Anna’s aforementioned rival, Lexy Jones.
Is Lexy the killer?
Up until the final 16 minutes of the last episode of His & Hers, viewers believed that Lexy Jones, who is soon discovered to be a transformed Catherine Kelly, is the person behind the Dahlonega murders of former high school besties Rachel, Helen and Zoe (Marin Ireland).
It is believed that Anna would be the last of the foursome that Lexy was set to kill after Lexy’s husband, Richard, brings Anna to a lake house at the end of Episode 5. However, Priya shows up just in time to shoot Lexy dead after coming to the conclusion that her real identity is Catherine Kelly, who viewers see taunted and teased by the group of girls in the flashbacks of Anna’s 16th birthday throughout the episodes.
What happened at Anna’s birthday party?
Each episode offers a tiny glimpse of the moments leading up to Anna’s 16th birthday party, as documented on her video camera — because even back then, she had dreams and aspirations of working in news.
It isn’t until the finale that it is revealed that Anna was sexually assaulted on her birthday after her friends, Rachel, Helen and Zoe, not only set up the attack, but watched it happen as well. Catherine, who was also assaulted, ran away under the impression that Anna had helped to orchestrate what went down in the woods.
So, did Lexy kill her former friends?
In the plot twist that no one saw coming, Lexy was not the killer, and instead, it was Anna’s mother, Alice, who carried out the murders of each girl before framing Lexy for the gruesome attacks.
It’s explained in a letter addressed to Anna, in which Alice reveals that after her granddaughter died under her care and Anna ran away, she watched old videotapes to close the gap that had been widened by the grief of two losses.
The final tape, which featured the horrendous sexual assault that Anna experienced on her 16th birthday, left Alice with one thing on her mind — revenge.
In the letter, she explains that “nobody really suspects a woman, let alone an old woman, of such violence,” which is how Alice managed to meticulously carry out each of the murders, before ultimately planting evidence in Lexy’s lake home that succeeded in suggesting that it was carried out by Anna’s work rival, who really was just an old friend looking to find justice for what was done to her as a teen.
While Richard maintained his wife’s innocence as he was arrested and taken away from the lake house after Priya fatally shot Lexy, no one believed him because not a single soul would’ve guessed that Anna’s mother was behind it all.
Throughout the entire series, they suspected Alice of being in the early stages of dementia; however, it was all a scheme to seek vengeance for the unspeakable acts done to her then-teenage daughter.
At the center of it all, His & Hers is a tale about how deep a mother’s love truly is. In fact, the creator calls it a love story that speaks to the depths of his own mother’s love.
His & Hers is now available to stream on Netflix.
